I don't really know what to do at this point besides just returning it and getting a replacement. I tried some tools like running testdisk, which did not even find the drive at all, nor did any other method of drive detection.įinally, I removed and then reinstalled the MX500 in the same m.2 slot, the red light on the MX500 was still on just like on first boot, but still not being detected at all. I rebooted my machine, the MX500 no longer appeared in the BIOS or the drive manager. The drive disappeared from the disk manager window afterwards. In the disk manager, there was an automatic pop-up requesting to choose a partition type between GUID or MBR. I installed the MX500 in the top m.2 slot (nearest the CPU), the documentation indications this slot is for SATA drives.įirst boot, the MX500 was showing up in the BIOS and also in the disk manager in Windows, but not Windows Explorer. So, I've really gone the extra mile on this and concluded two things:ġ) The app is buggy and may not work at allĢ) Even if it says the firmware update succeeded, it may not haveģ) bonus conclusion - don't update the firmware unless you know what it fixes and you're affected by it.I recently rebuilt my PC with an ASUS ROG Strix B450-F mobo, Ryzen 2700, and added in a Crucial MX500 m.2 SATA drive. I even looked at the BIN file (from the zip) of the firmware itself and I can see the version # listed in there, so I'm pretty sure it's applying the right thing, but. Showing that it worked (updateStatus=pass) but at the end, it still has the same firmware as before. Msecli.exe -U -i MX500_M3CR045.zip -n Drive4 -JĪnd again, it seems to flash okay, and the json output at the end (that's the -J option) looked like: I even took the extra step of running the firmware update command directly (I saved the ZIP file from the temp directory from where the app saved it), so it looks kind of like: I can use the app to update the firmware, and it tells me it went great, but then it still has "044" afterwards. The one that was still on the factory-shipped firmware "044". The drive that flashed okay still reports having the new firmware, so I guess that's good. Don't know if that makes a difference, or if it was the USB that helped it out. The Crucial app actually performs better on this one (older i7-7700K system) than on the newer i9-10850K on a Z490 motherboard. I took the drives and put them into a USB dock on a different computer. I tinkered a bit more before calling it quits. the release notes said something or about arrays, and I do plan to have these two in a logical stripe, and now that they have different firmware versions I just hope that's not an issue long term. Don't know what else to do or say about it. I'm not going to remove the couple of NVMe drives, or a large HDD that's in there because I need those, but whatever the case, their app is buggy.įor now I'm just going to leave well enough alone and use the drives as-is since they seem functional. I also removed an older M500 drive, just in case it was freaking out their app, but it didn't help. I thought maybe it was some bad mix of having 2 of the same drives installed, so I unplugged the one that "succeeded", but still no joy. Throughout all of this, both drives do in fact show up in Disk Management just fine - I can create volumes, format, do whatever, but Crucial's own app seems woefully broken. Interestingly, one of the drives seemed to update okay and on the rare occasion when the app shows them at all, it shows the new "045" is on there. And when it does it either says the firmware on one of them still needs updating, or "firmware failure". I ran into the same issues where sometimes their app would see the drives, sometimes it wouldn't. Lo and behold, the firmware updates did not go quite well. So I think, great, I haven't put anything on these yet, I may as well update the firmware right now before I initialize them or do anything else. I put them both in my system, ran their storage exec software to get a look at them, and the first thing it says is that both came with M3CR044 firmware, and by the way M3CR045 is available. Here it is Jand I just got two new MX500 4TB drives delivered today.
